You know it. I’m sure you do. You are just about to introduce yourself to someone and you think, I’m not good enough. You become aware of something in your past that was hurtful and embarrassing and somehow that makes you less valuable. At the current time you are unable to start a friendship with this new interesting person that could bring much happiness into your life. You remembered a flaw in the midst of your perfection.
Many of us struggle with our emotions. To share our feelings can be a great relief. Sharing feelings isn’t often taught. People are lucky to learn some options and choices related to their feelings. Put away the cheese. Straighten up the fridge. Be in by 10. Clean up the bathroom. Don’t eat anymore butter tarts. You reach a point where when you leave home it can be a relief. To have a label that drags you down is annoying. One label that I have had given to me is schizophrenia. It is hard enough to show you are worth something in this world, but to do so with a demeaning label like this is extra hard. When I cover it up or refer to it as the ‘s’ word or talk about my imagination or about the angels that talk then I hope you have some acceptance to this description of the condition.
We were up there, back stage, waiting for our turn to perform, repeating lines, mouthing words, going over and over our monolouges. Nervous anticipation wasn’t all that was in the air but a kind of magic that only comes on that final night when the audience is full and is with us as we presented our stories. There are great works of literature helping us to discover how we can best declutter. We can have less. We can simplify. We can give our things to others in need. We were all sitting around a campfire. Everyone was singing Cats In The Cradle and I had the feeling that this was a special moment but I didn’t have words to describe it, at that young age.
For me camp was about activities and candy and sleep outs and friends and having a good time. It wasn’t as stressful as working at a camp. So much of our day was planned for us, we just had to show up and try our best.
The hardest part was swimming lessons. There were cold days and we were still expected to go in the water. Sometimes we would pretend to be sick so we could skip swimming in that cold lake. Read the rest of this entry
